Assessing Local Turbulence Strength from a Time Series
نویسنده
چکیده
We study the possible link between “local turbulence strength” in a flow which is represented by a finite time series and a “chaotic invariant”, namely, the leading Lyaponuv exponent that characterizes this series. To validate a conjecture about this link, we analyze several time series of measurements taken by a plane flying at constant height in the upper troposphere. For each of these time series we estimate the leading Lyaponuv exponent which we then correlate with the structure constants for the temperature. In addition, we introduce a quantitative technique to educe the scale contents of the flow and a methodology to validate its spectrum.

Assessing Turbulence Strength via Lyaponuv Exponents
In this paper we study the link between ‘turbulence strength’ in a flow and the leading Lyaponuv exponent that characterize it. To this end we use two approaches. The first, analytical, considers the truncated convection equations in 2-dimensions with three (Lorenz model) and six components and study their leading Lyaponuv exponent as a function of the Rayleigh number. For the second approach w...
متن کاملA contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of Fourier series via an Applied Analysis standpoint; an application in turbulence spectrum of eddies
In the present paper, we shall attempt to make a contribution to approximate analytical evaluation of the harmonic decomposition of an arbitrary continuous function. The basic assumption is that the class of functions that we investigate here, except the verification of Dirichlet's principles, is concurrently able to be expanded in Taylor's representation, over a particular interval of their do...
متن کاملAssessing the Effects of Atmospheric Stability on the Inertial Subrange of Surface Layer Turbulence using Local and Global Multiscale Approaches
The conceptual framework for modelling the inertial subrange is strongly influenced by the Richardson cascade, now the subject of various reinterpretations. One apparent departure from the Richardson cascade is attributed to boundary conditions influencing large-scale motion, which in turn, can directly interact with smaller scales thereby destroying the universal statistical scaling attributes...

متن کاملAn indoor FSO link under the weak turbulence regime: measurements and model validation
In this paper, we present the measurements performed on a free space optics (FSO) communications link using an indoor atmospheric chamber. In particular, we have generated several different optical turbulence conditions, demonstrating how even the weak turbulence regime can strongly affect the FSO link performance. We have carried out an in-depth analysis of the data collected during the measur...
